Indy 500 Starting Grid 2025

Qualifying for the 2025 Indy 500 brought big drama. Every driver had four laps to set their fastest average speed. That’s how the starting order gets locked in.

This year, a rookie took the top spot. Robert Shwartzman, driving car No. 83 for Prema Racing, grabbed pole position. His average speed? A blazing 232.790 mph. It’s rare to see a first-timer start up front. That’s part of what makes this year so exciting.

Joining him on the front row are two veterans. Takuma Sato, a two-time winner, starts in the middle. Pato O’Ward, one of the fastest rising stars, begins on the outside.

The full grid includes 33 drivers, lined up in 11 rows, each with 3 cars. This format has been part of the Indy 500 tradition for over 100 years.

Penalty News: Team Penske Shake-Up

Just before the race, big news hit the paddock. Two top drivers—Josef Newgarden and Will Power—were dropped to the back of the grid.

Both drive for Team Penske. During a post-qualifying inspection, officials found illegal parts in the rear of their cars, which resulted in their losing their starting spots.

Newgarden and Power now start 32nd and 33rd. They were also fined, their pit positions were taken away, and their race strategists were suspended for the day.

Scott McLaughlin, also with Team Penske, kept his spot. His car passed the checks.

These changes shook up the back of the field. They also gave fans more action to watch as these two stars tried to climb back through the pack.

2025 Indy 500 Race Day Schedule

Race day is packed with action from sunrise to the green flag. Gates open early, fans fill the stands, and pre-race ceremonies bring energy to the track. Then it’s time to race.

• 12:18 PM – National anthem and invocation
