How to Run a Week 1 Pick’em Pool
Most pools take five minutes to set up. Agree on the format, the deadline and the tiebreaker, and write all three at the top of the master copy so there is no argument on Monday night.

For the tiebreaker, every player writes the total combined points in Broncos at Chiefs on Monday night. Closest number wins, or closest without going over if your pool prefers it.

Week 1 Games That Decide Most Pools
Openers are noisy. Rosters are new, there is no film on the season yet, and favorites do not hold up the way they do in November. These four games usually split a pool.
- Patriots at Seahawks, Wednesday 8:20 p.m. A Super Bowl LX rematch. Seattle won 29 to 13 in February, has beaten New England four straight times, and opens as a 3.5 point favorite at Lumen Field. It is also the first Wednesday game in Patriots history, and rookie back TreVeyon Henderson is out. This game locks before most players have printed a sheet.
- 49ers at Rams, Thursday 8:35 p.m. The first NFL regular season game in Australia, played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Friday morning local time. Long travel and a neutral crowd flatten the usual home edge, so treat this NFC West game as a coin flip, not a lock.
- Bills at Texans, Sunday 1:00 p.m. Both teams went 12 and 5 last season and both won a road playoff game. It is Joe Brady’s first game as Buffalo head coach, and Josh Allen is 1 and 4 in Houston, where the Texans sacked him eight times last year.
- Broncos at Chiefs, Monday 8:15 p.m. Andy Reid confirmed on September 8 that Patrick Mahomes will start, barring a setback, in his first game since December surgery on torn knee ligaments. He practiced fully in camp but played no preseason snaps. Denver was the AFC top seed at 14 and 3 and led the league with 68 sacks. Kansas City is a 2.5 point favorite. This is the tiebreaker game in most pools, so it carries double weight.
In straight up pools, chasing upsets costs more than it pays in Week 1. In confidence pools, put your low numbers on the four games above and save the high numbers for the clearest mismatches.
