The Men’s Draw Lost Its Middle
Only five seeds survive: Zverev (1), Alcaraz (2), Shelton (8), Tiafoe (11) and Blockx (28). Novak Djokovic went out in the first round to Mariano Navone in five sets, his first opening round loss at a major in 20 years. Daniil Medvedev (7) fell to Tiafoe in the round of 16.
Tiafoe vs Michelsen is all American, so one home player is guaranteed a semifinal place. Michelsen is unseeded, ranked 46th, and has not dropped a set all fortnight. He is the first man born in 2004 to reach a Grand Slam quarterfinal.
A Qualifier in the Women’s Last Eight
Qinwen Zheng came through qualifying ranked 121st after elbow surgery and knocked out Iga Swiatek (8) from 0-5 down in the opening set. She is the first qualifier in the US Open women’s quarterfinals since Emma Raducanu in 2021.
Sabalenka is into a sixth straight US Open quarterfinal and chasing a third title in a row. Her opponent Linda Noskova arrived as the reigning Wimbledon champion. Pegula vs Navarro gives the women’s draw its own all American last eight tie.

Why Some Slots Say Qualifier
That is correct, not a mistake in the file. Sixteen qualifiers join each singles draw, and they are placed after the bracket is published. Write those names in yourself. It matters this year: Qinwen Zheng came out of one of those slots and is now in the quarterfinals.
