2026 Indy 500 Starting Grid & Lineup

Qualifying for the 2026 Indy 500 had a soggy start. Rain washed out Saturday entirely, the first full-day washout of Indy 500 qualifying since 2008, so IndyCar set the whole field on Sunday using a single-day condensed format. Felix Rosenqvist topped both the first round and the second round at over 232 mph, but the Firestone Fast Six was where the real fireworks went off.

When it ended, Alex Palou was back where he was three years ago: on pole. His four-lap average of 232.248 mph earned the defending Indy 500 winner his second career pole at the Brickyard and a $100,000 check from PPG. He becomes the first defending Indy 500 winner to claim the pole the following year since Helio Castroneves did it in 2010. Joining him on the front row are Alexander Rossi in the middle and David Malukas on the outside, both putting down monster runs to lock out Row 1.

There was late drama, too. Three hours after qualifying ended, IndyCar disallowed the qualifying times of Caio Collet and Jack Harvey for unapproved car modifications. Collet, who had qualified 10th, and Harvey, who had qualified 29th, were both moved to the rear of the field. That sent everyone behind them up the order and rewrote the bottom half of the grid.

The full 33-car grid follows below. You can also print it out using the link further down the page.

Pole Position: Alex Palou Strikes Again

The Spaniard is the story of the 2026 Indy 500 starting grid. Alex Palou, driving the No. 10 Chip Ganassi Racing Honda, posted a four-lap average of 232.248 mph in the Firestone Fast Six to claim his second career Indy 500 pole. He becomes the first defending Indy 500 winner to claim pole the following year since Helio Castroneves in 2010.

Palou is also the reigning four-time NTT IndyCar Series champion, with three wins already in the 2026 season and a commanding points lead. He goes into Sunday as the clear favorite, and oddsmakers have him priced accordingly.

Alexander Rossi, the 2016 winner, will start second in his best Indy starting spot since 2017. The Ed Carpenter Racing driver was in search of his first ever Indy 500 pole and ran a stunning opening lap of 232.568 mph before settling for P2. David Malukas rounds out the front row in his new Team Penske ride. After spending 2025 at A.J. Foyt Enterprises, he joined Penske this off-season and put the No. 12 Chevy on Row 1.

Storylines to Watch in the 2026 Indy 500

This year’s lineup has more drama packed into it than usual. Here are the angles worth a closer look:

Katherine Legge attempts “The Double.” Legge announced this week that she plans to race the Indy 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway on the same day. Only five drivers have ever attempted the 1,100-mile double, and Legge will be the first woman in history to do so if she pulls it off. She qualified 26th in the No. 11 Chevrolet.

Castroneves chases history again. Four-time Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves starts P14 in the No. 06 Meyer Shank Racing Honda. He competes only part-time in IndyCar now, focusing on the Stock Car Pro Series, but every May he comes back to chase the record-breaking fifth Indy 500 win that would set him apart from A.J. Foyt, Al Unser and Rick Mears. He is 51 on race day.

Two F1 names on the grid. Mick Schumacher (Rahal Letterman Lanigan, P27) is a rookie this year after racing in Formula 1 with Haas and serving as a Mercedes reserve. Romain Grosjean (Dale Coyne, P24) is back in IndyCar after spending the 2025 season in IMSA sports cars. Their presence adds star power and unpredictability to the field.

Penalty drama scrambles the back. Three hours after qualifying ended, the times of Caio Collet (originally P10) and Jack Harvey (originally P29) were disallowed for unapproved car modifications, sending both to the rear. It is the second straight year that post-qualifying technical penalties have rewritten the Indy 500 grid; in 2025, Josef Newgarden and Will Power were both demoted to the back row.

Newgarden buried again. Two-time Indy 500 winner Josef Newgarden starts P23 in the No. 2 Team Penske Chevy. It is a better starting spot than P32 (where he started last year after a Penske penalty), but the only Penske driver to miss the Fast Six this year will need a big strategy and some luck to climb back to the front.

A rare Cayman Islands flag inside the top 10. Kyffin Simpson, driving the No. 8 Ganassi Honda, qualified seventh, the best result of his young career and one of the rare top-10 starts ever for a Cayman Islands driver at Indy.
