When and Where is the FIFA World Cup 2026?

The tournament opens on June 11, 2026. Mexico plays South Africa in the opening match at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

All matches take place across 16 venues in three countries. The final is on July 19, 2026 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

What is the FIFA World Cup Bracket and How Does it Work?

A World Cup bracket shows the full path from the group stage to the championship game. After the group stage ends, the top teams enter the knockout rounds. From that point, every match is win or go home.

Each team must win four knockout matches to reach the final. Fans use the bracket to track results, make predictions and follow every round in real time.

The 2026 bracket covers five knockout rounds: the Round of 32, Round of 16, Quarterfinals, Semifinals and the Final.

What is Different about the 2026 World Cup Bracket?

The 2026 World Cup is the first to feature 48 teams up from 32. That change makes the entire bracket structure bigger and more exciting.

There are now 12 groups of four teams instead of eight groups. The top two teams from each group advance automatically. The eight best third-placed teams across all 12 groups also advance. That brings the total to 32 teams entering the knockout stage.

The biggest change is a brand new first round called the Round of 32. This round has never existed at a World Cup before. Past tournaments went straight from the group stage to a Round of 16 with 16 teams. In 2026, 32 teams enter the knockout stage first.

The total match count rises from 64 to 104 games across the full tournament.

Here is how teams advance from the group stage:

How the Round of 32 bracket works:

Group winners always face either a runner-up from a different group or one of the eight best third-placed teams. Third-placed teams only ever face group winners in this round. Teams from the same group cannot meet again in the Round of 32.

FIFA placed the top four ranked nations: Spain, Argentina, France and England in separate quadrants of the bracket. Spain and Argentina cannot meet before the final. France and England also stay apart until at least the semifinals.
