How the Round of 32 Bracket Works
Group winners always face either a runner-up from a different group or one of the eight best third-placed teams. Third-placed teams only ever face group winners in this round. Teams from the same group cannot meet again in the Round of 32.
FIFA placed the top four ranked nations (Spain, Argentina, France and England) in separate quadrants of the bracket. Spain and Argentina sit on opposite sides and cannot meet before the Final. France and England also stay apart until at least the semifinals. That keeps the marquee clashes for the closing rounds.
